Recently, we added a primo collection of painted animations to our library by the Romanian artist Sabin Bălașa. In honour of these splendid works, we’ve put together a deep dive into the animation style and the story behind it.
In this article we’re getting into Balasa and his unique place in the animation world alongside interviews with Sabin’s son (painter Tudor Balasa) and contemporary Romanian artist - Nicolae Romanitan.

The Island Closest To Heaven (1984, 1hr 43min)
Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi
Obayashi's sentimental and Ghibli-esque "summer" vacation film (though it is Christmas in Hawaii.) The Island Closest to Heaven - follows a young womanin search of the idyllic island her late father once described to her. Tomoyo Harada brings an innocence and wide-eyed curiosity to the lead role, encountering a colourful assortment of characters along the way. It's perfect warm and wistful little vacation of a movie for a late-summer viewing.
